It was pointed out that solution of the generalized Darken model for interdiffusion permitted the obtention of an exact expression for the evolution of component distributions in closed and open systems. The model permitted the computation of the drift velocity as a function of time and position in a diffusion couple. For instance, it permitted the prediction of the Kirkendall shift in a multi-component diffusion couple, and the position of an arbitrary alloying element as a function of time.
