A new analysis was presented for determining the average values of the main and cross interdiffusion coefficients, over given composition ranges, on the basis of the concentration profiles for an isothermal ternary diffusion couple. The analysis involved the integration of interdiffusion fluxes over selected regions of the diffusion zone. The analysis was applied to isothermal diffusion couples in the Cu-Ni-Zn and Fe-Ni-Al systems. The analysis was also extended so as to treat interdiffusion in a ternary alloy in a temperature gradient. The extended analysis was used for the determination of interdiffusion coefficients and thermotransport coefficients, as well as the diffusion flux contributions which arose from gradients of temperature and concentration in a U-Pu-Zr alloy when subjected to a temperature gradient.
