An equation for the pressure-dependence of the melting points of elements was derived which was valid up to pressures that were of the order of their ambient bulk moduli. Melting curves were calculated for Ag, Al, Am, Ar, Au, Cm, Cr, Cu, Fe, Kr, Mg, Mo, Ne, Ni, Np, Os, Pa, Pb, Rn, Ru, Th, U, W and Xe. The calculated melting curves were in good agreement with existing data. An apparent equivalence of the present melting-point relationship to the Lindemann criterion was noted, as well as the lack of any rigorous proof of their equivalence. It was shown that the apparent mathematical equivalence of the 2 formulae implied the existence of a new relationship between the Grüneisen constant, the bulk and shear moduli, and the pressure-derivative of the shear modulus.
