It was recalled that stick–slip dislocation motion, which had been experimentally observed in situ, was beyond the scope of the simplest models. The inclusion of extra degrees of freedom, which governed the change-over between the glide and sessile dislocation states, made it possible to furnish a general description of dislocation dynamics. A solution to the statistical model was obtained here which described the mechanisms of stick–slip dislocation motion, and associated features of material plasticity.
