An examination was made of the nature of the interaction between dislocations and second-phase particles. The role played by partial dislocations in controlling the process via which a dislocation passed an obstacle was also considered. The main observation was that, provided that care was taken in constructing the elastic model, the results of atomic-level simulations and those of elasticity theory analysis yielded the same predictions for dislocation-obstacle interactions.
