A configuration space which unified the continuum theory of defects and classical elasticity was presented for materials having a continuous distribution of dislocations. Weak equations of motion were derived from the principle of virtual work. By using the Helmholtz decomposition theorem, this yielded a coupled system of equations for the dynamics of dislocations and classical elasticity.
