An analytical solution was derived for the stress field, which was due to an edge dislocation that was located near to a coated inclusion in a solid, by using the Muskhelishvili complex variable method. The force on the dislocation was then calculated. Examples were given for various coating thickness and material constant combinations. It was shown that, when the coating layer was thick, the elastic properties of the inclusion had no significant effect upon the force acting on the dislocation. Therefore, the equilibrium position and stability of the dislocation could be obtained. If the coating layer was thin, both the shear modulus and Poisson ratio of the inclusion and the coating could greatly change the equilibrium position and stability of the dislocation.
