The concept of the misfit-compensating ledge (disconnection) was reviewed. An analysis was made of boundaries between face-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packed, between trigonal and hexagonal close-packed and between body-centered cubic and face-centered cubic structures. A near coincidence site simulation was made of the latter case, and the results were found to be in good agreement with O-lattice model predictions. The results were also equivalent to those which were found by direct inspection of the dichromatic complex of the structures which formed the interface. The conclusions were also compared with transmission electron microscopic observations of interphase boundaries in a Ti-6.62%Cr alloy, where the disconnections were arranged in pairs and had Burgers vectors with a component of ½[00•1].
