The structural relationship between the µ- and λ-phases, which were approximants of icosahedral and decagonal quasicrystals, respectively, was studied from the viewpoint of modulated structures. The difference between these phases was attributed to a difference in the ordered arrangements of atomic vacancies in the close-packed layers. The modulation was considered to be due to rearrangement of the atomic vacancies, in response to the occurrence of charge-density waves.
