A new set-up for X-ray micro-diffraction was developed which permitted the very local characterisation of materials; the size of the focussed beam being of the order of only a few μm, and the position of the beam being governed to an accuracy of about 30μm. Data such as the average size of the coherently diffracting volume, the local dislocation density, the residual stresses, local fluctuations in the residual stresses and intragranular misorientations, could be deduced.
