The structure of this decagonal approximant phase, which had previously been described in terms of an aggregate of clusters, was here interpreted as being a modulated structure. It consisted of modulated layers, in which an ordering of vacancies occurred in the distorted close-packed layers. The stacking motif in this phase was different to those often found in icosahedral approximants such as the ยต-Al4Mn phase.
