Relaxation of the stresses which were associated with grain boundary extrinsic dislocations was investigated by means of the in situ transmission electron microscopy of near Σ = 3 {111}, near Σ = 11 {311} and near Σ = 11 (332) grain boundaries. The results showed that the stress relaxation depended upon the grain boundary structure. In the case of periodic grain boundaries, it required discrete interactions between intergranular dislocations. In the case of non-periodic grain boundaries, widening of the dislocation contrast was attributed to dislocation core spreading.
