The formation mechanisms of grain-boundary misorientation spectra in materials having moderate stacking-fault energies were considered. These mechanisms included multiple twinning and grain-boundary splitting. It was shown that, if the former mechanism predominated, the fraction of Σ = 3 boundaries in the spectra did not exceed 40%. Domination of the latter mechanism resulted in spectra with some 70% having Σ = 3 boundaries.
