A generalized Darken method was presented for treating multi-component interdiffusion. This permitted the obtention of an exact expression for the evolution of component distributions in closed and open systems, for arbitrary initial distributions and time-dependent boundary conditions. The model also permitted the study of the evolution of the composition of the solid solution under heat treatment, evaporation and/or oxidation.
