The advantages and disadvantages of existing experimental procedures for the investigation of interdiffusion in multi-component systems were considered. In particular, experimental methods which involved using diffusion couples having intersecting diffusion paths, and the method of analysis of zero-flux planes, flux reversals and diffusion paths, were described from the viewpoint of reliability and usefulness. The experimental methods were illustrated with regard to experimental data on interdiffusion in the Cu-Ni-Fe system. It was concluded that the methodological basis of interdiffusion experiments required further theoretical and experimental work.
