An investigation was made of the correlation between bond energies, used in a nearest-neighbour mean-field model, and point-defect behavior. Four main types of behavior were identified which could be exhibited, by B2 intermetallics, with respect to the variation in vacancy concentration with alloy composition. The results showed that alloys would exhibit constitutional vacancies for a wide range of bond energy combinations. By using a bond-breaking model, the limits on bond energies for which the alloy would exhibit constitutional vacancies were identified. Various published mean-field results for β-NiAl were rationalized in terms of the bond energies which were used in those studies.
