The distortion regions near to grain boundaries in α-Fe-C solid solutions were studied by using internal friction methods. It was found that the total thickness of these regions was quite large, though the thickness of real grain boundaries was usually very restricted. It was also found that the smaller the grain size, the wider was the total distortion region. A model was proposed for the structure of distortion regions near to grain boundaries.
