Samples of Zr-substituted BaCeO3, with the composition BaCe0.9-xZrxY0.1O3, were synthesized. A single-phase structure was found for x-values ranging from 0 to 0.9. The oxides exhibited pure protonic conduction in H-containing atmospheres, and exhibited protonic, oxide-ionic and electronic mixed conduction under high O partial pressures at high temperatures. The chemical stability against CO2 increased with increasing Zr content, but the protonic conductivity decreased with increasing x-value.
