A dislocation mechanism of friction between an atomic-force microscope probe and an atomically smooth solid surface was put forward. In this mechanism, the contact region was represented by an edge dislocation. The tribo-acoustic emission measured with an atomic-force microscope revealed the dislocation nature of friction. The friction force was calculated for a parabolic tip.
