The concept of topological defects, of nanoscale translational order, in nano-structures of various types was introduced. Published experimental data were analyzed and this furnished direct evidence for the existence of nano-defects in self-assembled periodically ordered nanostructures such as arrays of quantum dots, self-assembled superlattice films of nanoparticles and arrays of C nano-tubes. The specific geometrical features of perfect and partial cellular dislocations (seen as a type of nano-defect), and their role in superplastic deformation in nanocrystalline materials, were considered.
