Stacking faults and face-centered cubic grains were studied by means of electron diffraction. Compositions such as CoCrPt and CoCrPtB were compared for various underlayers and deposition conditions. It was found that CoCrPtB alloys tended to contain greater numbers of stacking faults and face-centered cubic grains than did CoCrPt alloys. The uses of underlayers, as well as low deposition rates and base pressures helped to reduce the numbers of stacking faults and face-centered cubic phases.
