An optimum hot-pressing technology was developed which yielded transparent fluoride ceramics with fast ionic conductivities. It was found that the conductivity of Ba0.98Gd0.02F2.02 was equal to 1 x 10-6S/cm at 500K, and that the overall data could be described by:

o (S/cm) = 82 exp[-0.787(eV)/kT]

The conductivity of Ba0.85Gd0.15F2.15 was equal to 1 x 10-5S/cm at 500K, and that the overall data could be described by:

o (S/cm) = 325 exp[-0.746(eV)/kT]
