A rationalization was presented for the simple case of interstitial diffusion in a perfect matrix, equating the mechanistic and thermodynamic approaches. The overall synthesis with its re-definition of Fick’s first law and the diffusion coefficient appeared to be novel, and was suggested to be widely applicable to the analysis of diffusion.
