Results of the investigation of regions of enhanced concentrations of point defects in Pd, Pt and W were considered. The regions of enhanced concentrations were localized near to internal interfaces; especially near to crystallite-conjugation regions in nominally pure metal polycrystals. In order to determine the elemental and phase compositions of regions of enhanced concentration, a parameter (Λ2) for the quality of the point defects was introduced. The concentration of so-called natural solid-solution forming impurity-O in regions of enhanced concentration was determined to be of the order of 0.05 to 0.2at%. By using the Λ2 parameter, it was established that vacancy-O complexes were formed in some d transition metals, due to a supply of vacancies from the cores of crystallite-conjugation regions to regions of enhanced point-defect concentration.
