It was noted that attractive non-coplanar dislocations, which could not react to form junctions, could nevertheless form crossed states (junctions of null length). Such configurations had recently been produced during numerical simulations. The physical origin of the crossed states was clarified, and their conditions of occurrence were calculated within a simplified elastic framework. The results were further compared with mesoscopic simulations of intersecting dislocations in face-centered cubic and body-centered cubic crystals.
