It was shown, in terms of the isotropic elastic crystal model, that the formation of planar layers consisting of edge dislocation pile-ups was energetically advantageous if the shear modulus of the crystal was far lower than the bulk modulus. As the pressure increased, the dislocation radius decreased. This could destroy the crystal structure.
