It was recalled that the plasticity of materials was usually controlled by a combination of a small number of elementary dislocation mechanisms. The main properties of Peierls-type friction mechanisms, local pinning and cross-slip in metals and alloys were recalled. The combination of these mechanisms in several intermetallic alloys was then considered.
