Similarities in the microstructural patterns which developed during the monotonic deformation of face-centered cubic metals and alloys were demonstrated via observations and scaling laws that indicated the operation of similar dislocation mechanisms for a wide range of materials and deformation conditions. One requirement was that there should be sufficient 3-dimensional dislocation mobility to create 3-dimensional structures.
