Dislocation dynamics simulations of multiple slip in face-centered cubic crystals led to the formation of patterned microstructures. The mechanisms participating in dislocation storage and dynamic recovery were investigated. Cross-slip and short-range interactions were found to govern the bifurcation from uniform to ordered microstructures.
