The nucleation of a pair of misfit dislocations with Burgers vectors, b1 and b2 (with b1 + b2 = 0), was studied for the case of an axially symmetrical 2-phase structure. By considering a cylindrical inclusion which was epitaxially stressed in a unbounded matrix, the variation in the total energy due to the formation of the dipole was first determined as a function of the radius of the inclusion and the epitaxial stress. The conditions for the nucleation of the dipole at the interface were then investigated as a function of the ratio of the shear modulus to the misfit stress.
