The properties of glasses in this system were studied (table 212). It was concluded that, in order to produce glasses having higher conductivities, the ZrF4 content should he reduced as much as possible because of the small polarizability of Zr. However, the fluorides of metals having a high polarizability were recommended as modifiers. They did not cause the F coordination number of Zr to decrease, or cause the Zr-F bond-length to shorten.
