The interaction free energy between 2 fluctuating dislocation lines that were in contact with a thermal bath was obtained quantitatively. By examining both in-plane and transverse-fluctuation polarizations, attractive and repulsive contributions to the free energy were identified and the results were interpreted in terms of effective multipolar interactions and the screening of separated lines. It was found that the usual form of the dislocation force should be modified to include an additional net attractive force when entropic effects were taken into account.
