Single crystals of Yb-doped material were grown, using the Czochralski technique, under a CF4 atmosphere. The photoluminescence and decay kinetics of the Yb2+ center in single crystals at 4 to 300K were described. A phenomenological 2 excited-state level model reproduced the quantitative characteristics of the excited state dynamics of the Yb2+ emission center.
