An atomistic approach was used to simulate the emission of dislocations around a nano-indentation on an (001) surface. This approach was quasi-static and computationally efficient. The simulation results illustrated the nucleation and emission of dislocations. Slip-vector analysis facilitated observation of the dislocations and permitted interpretation of the dislocation reactions which were induced during nano-indentation. The results confirmed that the von Mises shear stress was a good indicator of the atomic plastic behavior which occurred during nano-indentation.
