The enhancement of diffusion by deformation-, irradiation- or fluctuation-created Frenkel pairs and freely migrating defects was considered. The kinetic chemical rate equations for the production and annihilation of non-equilibrium defects, and their basic solutions, were analysed in order to review available experimental data. An enhancement parameter was proposed, and its dependence upon temperature and defect production-rate were predicted for the mechanisms of accelerated diffusion in metals.
