The correspondence theorem which related the solutions of displacement boundary value problems in classical and couple stress elasticity was formulated and used to derive the solutions for edge and screw dislocations in an infinite medium. The effects of couple stresses upon the dislocation strain energy was evaluated for both types of dislocation. It was shown that, within the radius of influence of each dislocation - in a metallic crystal with a dislocation density of 1010/cm2 - the strain energy contribution arising from couple stresses (excluding the core energy) was about 15% in the case of an edge dislocation, and about 11% in the case of a screw dislocation. It was shown that couple stresses had a large effect upon the total work of tractions which acted on the dislocation core surface.
