Migration through membranes of this steel was studied by using permeation cell techniques. In some cases, the up-stream side was covered with a layer of liquid Pb-17%Li alloy. The presence of this layer decreased the permeability by a factor of between 1 and 4 (table 101), and the activation energy for permeation decreased from 52 to 34kJ/mol. This implied that the solubility of D in Pb-17%Li alloy was lower than that in the steel and was almost independent of the temperature. The diffusivities also decreased by a factor of about 2 (table 102) when the Pb-17%Li alloy was present.
