The diffusion of D in the amorphous and crystalline phases was studied (figure 26). No sign of He permeation was detected in either type of material, whereas D diffused readily as protons, rather than as molecules. The D permeability in the amorphous material was slightly lower than that in the crystalline material. It was concluded that surface films on the as-received material had a marked effect upon the permeation behavior.
