Complex oxides La1.95Ca0.05M2O7−δ (M = Ce, Zr) were prepared by using sol–gel methods and were characterized by thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction. With sintered complex oxides as a solid electrolyte, the conductivity was measured in various atmospheres, and NH3 was synthesized from N and H at atmospheric pressure in a solid-state proton conducting cell reactor by electrochemical means. The rates of NH3 formation were up to 2.0 x 10−9mol/cm2s for La1.95Ca0.05Zr2O7−δ and 1.3 x 10−9mol/cm2s for La1.95Ca0.05Ce2O7−δ at 520C.
