It was noted that diffusion data on amorphous binary alloys were rare or non-existent; particularly in the present case. The successive deposition of components at high temperatures was used here in order to reveal the elementary processes of reactive diffusion during the formation of the metastable amorphous phase, and to determine the diffusion coefficient of Al in this phase. It was found that the results (figure 8) could be described by:

D (m2/s) = 1.2 x 10-10 exp[-69(kJ/mol)/RT]

This value was considered to be a good approximation to the bulk diffusion coefficient.
