It was recalled that many experiments had shown that the plastic deformation of quasicrystals could occur via a dislocation mechanism. By performing molecular-dynamics simulations close to absolute zero, an investigation was made of the application of a shear stress to a 3-dimensional model quasicrystal which consisted of Lennard-Jones particles and which contained an edge dislocation of Peierls-Nabarro type. Various methods were used to trace the dislocation line. In order to determine suitable Burgers vectors, calculations were made of the gamma surface. This was the misfit energy which was obtained by rigidly shifting 2 probe halves along a glide plane. Glide motion of the dislocation on various glide planes was observed. A plane of phasonic defects was detected in its wake.
