An investigation was made of the self-diffusion of Ni in liquid samples, at up to 1795K, using incoherent quasi-elastic neutron scattering methods (figure 29). The values of the self-diffusion coefficients varied within only 10%, over the accessible temperature range, as a function of composition. It was found that, although mixing had a marked effect upon the liquidus temperature and the undercooling behaviour, no relationship between these properties and atomic diffusion in the liquid was observed. It was suggested that diffusive motion was governed by the packing fractions of the atoms, which were all very similar in these dense liquids.
