The atomic structure of the reconstructed (001) plane was studied by means of scanning tunnelling microscopy and the infra-red spectroscopy of adsorbed H. The 4 phases, in order of decreasing P coverage, included c(2 x 2)/p(2 x 2) at a coverage of 2 monolayers, and (2 x 1) at a coverage of 1 monolayer. The (2 x 2) phase consisted of P dimers which were adsorbed onto a layer of P atoms. Removal of P adatoms at 300C produced the (2 x 1) phase; which was terminated by a complete layer of buckled P dimers. Further annealing at 400 to 500C yielded In-rich (2 x 4) reconstructions. One (2 x 4) reconstruction comprised a single P dimer in the top layer and four In dimers in the second layer. The two (2 x 4) phases differed in that one of the P atoms was replaced by an In atom.
