Transverse and longitudinal magnetostriction of a polycrystalline MgB2 superconductor was measured by the 3-terminal capacitance technique. Both components of the magnetostriction were found to be of the order of 10-5 at 15K. The correlation between the transverse and longitudinal strain of the sample was analyzed in the framework of the pinning-induced mechanism of magnetostriction. By a comparison of the longitudinal and transverse strain Poisson’s ratio was estimated. The scaling behavior of the 2 components of the magnetostriction was related to the scaling of the pinning forces in the investigated material.
