By using a magnetic compression method, a 2.3mm-diameter superconducting MgB2 rod was synthesized within a stainless steel tube. After compression, the MgB2 density within the tube attained 2.45g/cm3; very near to the theoretical value of 2.62g/cm3. At 4.2K and 0.5T, the quench current reached 870A.
