The image force which was felt by a dislocation which was near to, and parallel to, a grain boundary was examined as a function of the grain boundary misorientation and of the dislocation characteristics. This was based upon the anisotropy theory of elasticity. It was pointed out that there was no image force, due to a grain boundary, around the c-axes of basal and prismatic dislocations. For any misorientation around [1¯1•0] or [11•0], dislocations with b = a/3[2¯1•0] were attracted to the grain boundary. On the other hand, dislocations with b = a[00•1] were repelled from most grain boundaries around [1¯1•0].
