The H permeation properties and microstructures of V–Ti–Ni and Ta–Ti–Ni alloys were investigated at 523 to 673K. In both systems, a good H permeability was obtained in the alloys whose chemical compositions were near TiNi–V (or Ta) pseudo-binary system without H embrittlement. These alloys consist mainly of B2-TiNi and body-centred cubic-(V, Ti) (or body-centred cubic-(Ta, Ti)) phases. In particular, H embrittlement resistance was improved by the combination of the primary body-centred cubic phase and the eutectic B2+body-centred cubic structure. The primary body-centred cubic phase and the eutectic B2+body-centred cubic structure contribute mainly to H permeability and to improvement of H embrittlement, respectively. This paper showed a possibility of new type multi-phase H permeation alloys.
