Nano-indentation was simulated by computer, using a 2D discrete dislocation model under conditions of constrained geometry. Firstly, an indentation test near to a grain boundary was investigated for an arrangement with only one boundary. Secondly, an indentation test in the center of the surface of a small grain (lamella) was mimicked by an arrangement of 2 boundaries. The effect of a limited number of dislocation sources was studied by simulation of an indentation test in a plastically deformable film on an ideal elastic substrate, and by similar tests of an ideal elastic film on a plastically deformable substrate. The discrete nature of the plasticity was shown to have a significant effect upon the mechanical behavior.
