It had recently been shown that the quasi-static response of non-linear mesoscopic elastic solids to stress could be explained by invoking the formation of dislocation-based incipient kink bands. Here, using resonant ultrasound spectroscopy, it was confirmed that the dynamic behavior of these non-linear elastic systems was due to the interaction of dislocations with the ultrasound waves; thus resolving a long-standing mystery.
