The influence of crystal length upon the dislocation density in web-type material was considered. The observed variations in dislocation density did not exhibit a consistent pattern. The changes did not appear to be cumulative, and could be largely determined by the local thermal conditions during growth. It was suggested that most dislocations were not replicated during ribbon growth; thus resulting in non-accumulation. The results were explained in terms of dislocation glide which was caused by thermal gradient-induced stresses.
